East Cape

The East Cape extends from several miles east of San Jose del Cabo along the Sea of Cortez, to north of Punta Pescadero, Los Barriles and Rancho Buena Vista, which are all renowned among the fly fishing circles for spectacular marlin, slapjack, sailfish and pargo, among other varieties.

st one hour along Highway one from the Los Cabos International airport along a curving, dusty road that cuts through dried river beds and fields of pitahaya and cardon cacti, some more than two-storeys high and often called candelabra for their many arms that stretch up toward the sky.

Los Barriles is a quiet town with art galleries, coffee shops, real estate and RV parks at the furthest reaches of East Cape. Hooking a thousand pound sailfish isn't just a tall fish tale in East Cape, which attracts legions of die-hard sport fishermen with vanity license plates that read "Hook Um".

La Ribera features wide open cream sand beaches and several of the region's finest organic produce farms which supply the famed dining establishments of Los Cabos with home grown, pesticide-free vegetables and fruits, as well as Trader Joe's in the United States.

With loads of RV hookups and a spread out community, Los Frailes is a camper van and RV haven surrounded by red earth bluffs and several houses that ring the wide stretch of sand in this quiet and small bay.

Snorkeling and diving in cerelean blue-green waters is also a major attraction along East Cape, and there is no shortage of sheltered bays to explore.

Cabo Pulmo Marine Park, which lies between Los Barracas Bay to the north and Los Frailes Bay to the south, claims to be home to the only living coral reefs in the Sea of Cortez. It boasts five fingers of reefs that begin at the sandy beach and stretch a mile into the water supporting over 200 species of tropical fish that are protected within the park's waters.

Miles of isolated coastline, pristine waters and active water sports and a growing number of hidden hotels, residential enclaves and rentals makes East Cape a real steal for people looking for a unique Baja experience.
