NEW!!Why not start a holiday tradition and collect items for PATA Manzanillo in lieu of (or in addition) to presents?
Calgary PATA member, Chris Newbold, has gotten her entire family involved in the "gift of giving" with a holiday LEASH, COLLAR AND MUZZLE DRIVE:
Writes Chris: "We may have started something. I have put a box or leashes, collars and muzzles in our Vet's office as you suggested. I also asked my family if they would be willing to make donations. They are all great animal lovers and between us we own several pets. To take it even further my brother has put a box in his office lunch room. He works for a major oil company here in Calgary, and my sister not to be out done has put a box in her office lunch room. She works for Canada Post.
I am talking to my other sister who is a teacher here in Calgary and we hoping that we can get a box in her school, so that the children that attend her school can also contribute.
However the greatest response has come from Petland a pet store in Calgary. A friend of my sister has a daughter that works at Petland. All we had to do is get some teenage and 20 something girls involved and they ran with it. They collected dozens and dozens of collars and leashes.
In my family we usually give Christmas gifts to our pets from our pets. This year we are going to give leashes and collars to PATA in lieu of treats. I am hoping that I will have between 75 - 100 collars to bring down. We are all trying and get the message."

- ***DESPERATELY SEEKING: Stackable pet crates, cages, Pet Taxis***. No matter what the brand name, these provide shelter for the animals before and after surgery. 15 small, 15 medium and 15 large should be in place before each clinic begins in earnest. We have only a few currently. Anyone driving down with room in their car/truck/van can bring stackable crates that come apart in two pieces for us! Try asking around with neighbors, friends, family, your local vet office and even local pet store to see if anyone will donate lightly used ones.... we will furnish you with a bilingual letter explaining the use of the crates to present at the US/Mexico border.
- Havahart humane trap (racoon size to trap feral cats). This is a huge part in controlling the overpopulation problem of cats and dogs.
- A large digital scale is required to assess the animal's weight so the proper doses of anesthesia can be administered along with the correct amount of antibiotics, parasite meds and flea and tick treatment.
- Anti-tick shampoo such as FRONTLINE brand
- Clear plastic storage containers with lids and plastic chest of drawers so everything has a place and can be preserved during times of non-use.
- Front line brand anti-flea and anti-tick drops
- Dog treats to offer "patients" at our deticking washes
- surgery tables
- IV catheters (size #20-24 with a 1 1/4 needle) are needed along with catheter caps so that more meds can easily be administered if needed.
- Surgical instruments are ALWAYS needed. You can actually order spay and neuter surgical packs on e-Bay! Just type in "spay neuter pack" in the search box. Or email us directly to find out which particular instruments the vets are asking for currently
The recovery room requires a great deal of items. The list includes: stethoscopes, digital thermometers, a large portable clock with a second hand, fans, extension cords, blankets and sheets (these could come from local hotels), diapers and/or Chux pads. (Imagine 10 to 12 cats all taking a leak on a king-sized bed and you will smell the need for a diaper or Chux pad.) Plus it is just more sanitary for all involved. Interlocking rubber mats which serve as a floor (and can be purchased at Sam's or Wal-Mart), so recovery personnel and animals can remain comfortable.
